Understanding Types of Clear Span Tent Fabric

A clear span tent is a temporary building that has no support structures in the interior of the space. In other words, the entire structure is supported by rafters and support columns along the outer perimeter. Obviously, a lot of the support for the tents comes from the rafters and columns. These typically include aluminum and steel alloys. However, the textiles and type of tent fabric used are also important. The fabric has to be durable in order to provide a good-looking temporary building. This is something that you definitely want to keep in consideration as you decide on the use of your tent fabric. If it is for a wedding or important outdoor event, you want to make sure no weather can bring your event down. If it is for a temporary stand, or indoor event, you may not need as durable as a product.  As you think about renting this type of structure, you need to learn a bit about the textiles and fabrics available.

Available Tent Fabric Materials

There could be a variety of tent fabric materials on the market, but that does not mean that each material works well for a clear span tent. Understanding the different types of textiles allows you to choose one that will be durable and keep you and your event safe. You may be able to rent a tent made from the following materials.

Coated Vinyl

This engineered tent fabric has a core made from polyester or nylon mesh. The core material is covered with a liquid vinyl, which hardens into a pliable, strong material. All of these elements makes the material waterproof and resistant to the elements, including and not limited to: dirt, oil, salt, UV rays, chemicals, and mildew. The strength and durability of this material is considered by the number of yarns per distance, and the size and strength of the yarn used. Because of this, it is one of the strongest tent fabrics available.

Nylon

Nylon material offers breathability, a waterproof surface and durability. However, this material may not have as much tension as an engineered vinyl.

Laminated Vinyl

Another engineered fabric with a polyester or nylon mesh core, this fabric has an outer layer of solid vinyl. Heat, pressure or a combination of the two are applied to the three layers of fabric to create a single piece.

Polyester and Vinyl Composite

This composite is waterproof, which can be a big bonus for humid areas. The durable tent fabric is a popular option, but may not be as good as one of the engineered vinyl textiles.

Cotton

Cotton was one of the original tent fabric materials in producing tents. However, this textile does not have the same durability and waterproof-features as the newer materials. These downfalls make this a less popular option for clear span structures.

Rip Stop Nylon

This heavy-duty material is hard to tear, but it is physically heavier than the other materials listed. This means the clear span tent constructed with this material may require heavier support beams. The added weight could make the tent hard to move.

The rigidity, water repelling, durability and pliability all play an important role in the fabric’s ability to be a part of a clear span tent. Gathering more information about these materials can help you pick the clear span tent that will best suite your needs.

Other Options

Even once you pick the material, you may have other options. For example, some tents have insulation, they can be clear, blackout or come in the color of your choice. Some of these features, such as insulation, may cost more than a normal tent rental. However, in certain parts of the country and during certain seasons, an insulated clear span tent may be necessary to increase the usability of the structure. The opaqueness of the tent will also play a role in how you can use it. For example, a clear tent allows sunlight into the structure, but may be too hot to use on summer days. Work closely with a clear span tent professional to pick the right fabric and options for your structure.
